The Power of Pruning
Have you ever looked at a tree and noticed some branches just aren’t producing fruit? They’re either dead, weak, or draining energy from the tree. A good gardener knows that in order for the tree to grow stronger, pruning is necessary.
Life works the same way.
There are habits, relationships, and distractions in your life that are keeping you from growing into what God has called you to be. But here’s the hard truth—many people don’t want to let go. They want to hold on to old patterns, toxic relationships, and limiting beliefs even though these things are preventing their breakthrough.
John 15:2 tells us, "Every branch that bears fruit, He prunes, so that it may bear more fruit."
If you’re feeling stuck or stagnant, it’s time to examine what you need to cut away.
Step 1: Identify What’s Draining Your Energy
In gardening, there are three types of branches:
Dead branches – These no longer serve a purpose and must be removed.
Overgrown branches – These are taking up too much space and blocking new growth.
Weak branches – These are barely hanging on and preventing the tree from reaching its full strength.
Now, apply that to your life:
Dead branches: Are there relationships, habits, or commitments that are no longer serving you?
Overgrown branches: Are you spreading yourself too thin, saying "yes" to everything but not being effective?
Weak branches: Are there excuses, doubts, or fears holding you back from moving forward?
God is saying, "It’s time to prune."
Step 2: Letting Go with Faith
Let’s be honest—letting go is hard. We often hold on to things that feel familiar, even if they are hurting us. But holding onto what no longer serves you is like refusing to cut off a dead branch—it stops new growth from happening.
Ecclesiastes 3:6 says, "There is a time to keep and a time to throw away."
Your time, energy, and focus are too valuable to waste. If you want to Own Your 24, you must be willing to cut away what doesn’t align with where God is taking you.
That toxic friendship? Let it go.
That business partnership that isn’t aligned with your values? Cut it off.
That habit that’s keeping you from discipline and productivity? Release it.
You cannot grow into your next level if you are holding onto old weight.
Step 3: Make Room for New Growth
The most beautiful part of pruning is that it creates space for new blessings.
When you let go of toxic relationships, God brings better ones. When you release limiting beliefs, God opens doors for new opportunities. When you stop wasting time on distractions, you have time to build the life He called you to live.
Isaiah 43:19 reminds us, "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?"
God is trying to do something new in your life, but you must first let go of the old.
Step 4: Take Action – Start Pruning Today
Here’s how you can start pruning your life today:
Make a list of what no longer serves you – Habits, mindsets, relationships, time-wasting activities.
Ask God for clarity and strength – Letting go can feel uncomfortable, but trust that God is guiding you.
Take action – Stop making excuses. If something is not aligned with God’s plan for you, cut it off.
